Vannamei Shrimp
Whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei, synonym Penaeus vannamei), also known as Pacific White shrimp or King prawn, is a species of prawn of the eastern Pacific Ocean commonly caught or farmed for food from PENAEIDAE family and Alpha Code: PNV. In the late 20th century, in Latin America, the culture of L. vannamei started to develop with the availability of hatchery larvae, the development of feeds, the technification of the growth processes, the freezing installations and market channels, among others. From Mexico to Peru most countries developed in the 70s and 80s large production areas. Ecuador became one of the world leading producers of Vannamei shrimp. Around the beginning of the millennial, Asia introduced this species in their aquaculture operations (Changing from Penaeus monodon). China, Vietnam, India and others have become major packers as well.
In Bangladesh Vannamei cultivation was prohibited but in 2021 finally started to farm Vannamei shrimp on pilot basis before permitting commercial production following pleas from exporters as locally grown black tiger shrimp and freshwater prawn are unable to compete with cheaper varieties in western markets. If successful, the initiative is expected to breathe life back into the seafood industry of Bangladesh and exporters look eager to tap a prospective export boom.
As vannamei yet not permitted for commercial farming in Bangladesh, we are supplying Vannamei shrimp from India and Vietnam to our customers according to their requirements.
